Choice and Supplemental Educational Services (SES) information
Thompson School District 2008 – 2012

Under the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001, states and school districts are required to make annual Adequate Yearly Progress determinations for districts and schools, respectively. The ultimate goal of AYP is to have all students proficient in reading and math by the year 2014.

2008-2009 Choice
The district notified Winona Elementary School parents that Winona entered the 1st year of School Improvement status. That year, the parents of Winona’s 421 students were eligible to choose to send their children to district designated schools that did make AYP. One student participated.

2009-2010 Choice
Winona entered the 2nd year of School Improvement status. Parents of Winona’s 424 students could again take the choice option. Fifteen children transferred from Winona to either B.F. Kitchen or Garfield elementary.

Monroe Elementary School entered its 1st year of School Improvement status. Parents of Monroe’s 394 students could take the choice option. 10 children transferred from Monroe to either Stansberry or Garfield elementary.

2010-2011 Choice
Winona entered the 3rd year of School Improvement status. Parents of Winona’s 447 students could again take the choice option. Twelve students transferred from Winona to either B.F. Kitchen or Namaqua elementary.

Monroe Elementary entered its 2nd year of School Improvement status. Parents of Monroe’s 316 students could take the choice option. Nineteen students transferred from Monroe to either Stansberry or Mary Blair.

2011-2012 Choice
Winona stands in School Improvement Year 2 for Reading and Corrective Action in Math. Out of 418 students, parents of 2 students opted to send their children to B.F. Kitchen Elementary and parents of 7 students chose to send their children to Namaqua Elementary School.

Monroe stands in School Improvement Year 1 for Reading and Math.
Out of 330 students, NO parents took the choice option.

2009-2010 Supplemental Educational Service
Parents of eligible Winona students registered in 2009-2010 for free tutoring for their children from these Supplemental Educational Service (SES) providers:

Adventures in Learning K-12 – Provides individual tutoring at each student’s home
  • 6 served in their homes with parents present
Dreamcatcher Learning Center – Features research based curriculum in small group work
  • 14 served at Winona Elementary
Florida Educational Leadership Council – Students receive small group or individual instruction in both reading and math
  • 57 served at Winona Elementary
Sylvan Learning Center – Features diagnostic placement, monitoring and evaluation
  • 15 served at the Boys and Girls Club
Tutor Train – Promises to build math mastery and reading skills, and may offer transportation
  • 7 served in their homes with parents present

Parents of 261 eligible Winona students and 150 eligible Monroe students registered with the following providers and counts:

2011-2012 Supplemental Education Service (SES)
Only Winona Elementary must offer SES this year.

As of 10 October 2011, parents of 12 students out of 266 students eligible for free tutoring registered their children during the 1st registration window held from 6 – 22 September 2011.

A second registration window was open from 1 – 22 November for January 2012 service.

Information about these providers can be found here.

All the providers are Colorado Department of Education approved and use trained and/or certified teachers as tutors. All are required to inform parents of their children’s progress with tutoring. Parent have the right to change providers if they do not feel they are being informed of their student's progress.

Except for On-line or In-Home programs, if not at Winona or Monore, (space available), locations are yet to be determined.
