Dear Parent(s):
As you may be aware, public school districts throughout Colorado are struggling to maintain the funding necessary to provide educational and support services typically offered by schools. Diminished funding from the state level coupled with rising materials, utilities and fuel costs have placed increasing burdens on district budgets. Districts have been forced to scale back on many of the programs and services that have been traditionally provided for their students.
For the upcoming 2011-12 school year the Thompson School District is anticipating a $10.6 million dollar funding deficit. As a result, numerous staff positions, programs and services have already been reduced and/or eliminated throughout the district in an effort to adjust to this budgetary shortfall. With funding deficits anticipated to continue into the 2012-13 school year, it will be imperative for the district to continue to seek and implement additional cost savings measures in all areas. For the 2011-12 school year the Board of Education will be enforcing Board policy regarding walk distances for elementary, middle school and high school students. Walk distances are 1.5 miles for elementary students, 2.5 for middle school students and 3.0 miles for 9th & 10th graders; bus service is not scheduled for 11th and 12th graders. As Regular Education transportation is a non-mandated service, the current level of service will be scaled back district wide. Many bus stops and routes will be condensed and/or eliminated.
With connecting walk paths available between many neighborhoods and students’ home school of attendance regular education bus service will be discontinued from several locations for the 2011-12 school year. Upon request, we will work to provide information on recommended student walk routes in your area.
We understand these changes may have significant impacts on numerous students and families within our district. However, in order to preserve critical instructional programs and services for all students of the district, these measures are deemed necessary.
We appreciate your understanding and support in this matter.
Respectfully,
Nansi Crom
Transportation Director
